Yeah, XP is installed on the small partition (too small, which is why I was trying to resize it). The lost one was "just" data.

That's odd, because I just did some resizing with Partition Magic 8 and it worked fine.

I don't know what to tell you to recover the data...  if you REALLY need it, you can take your hard to some place that will charge you an arm and a leg to get the data back

I've never had issues with the original Trillian.  I ditched that hideous default skin though.  I use MBG v2.  It comes with a small exe that will automatically generate a new version of the skin based on a RGB value you supply, so it'll always match your desktop color.  Unfortunately, that small thumbnail doesn't do the skin justice - it really looks better than that.

Wow Whisp, thank you for pointing that out!  One of the worst things about Trillian is that nobody ever makes skins that match my XP themes properly!

Let's see, what else?

Wizmo:  Yes, all you Steve Gibson haters, it's from GRC.  No he's not over his "Assembly is the One True Language" obsession.  Get over it.  This is actually a very useful little program.  Trigger your screensaver, force reboots or restarts, and a host of other useful behaviors.  Oh yeah, it's also a truly hideous screen saver.  If you're using ShutDownNow!, this is free, and probably better.  I use it together with MBM (Motherboard Monitor) to force a shutdown in case my fans seize up and my processor tries to turn into a space heater, or simply to put my monitors into sleep mode when I walk away from my computer.

Perhaps it would have if he hadn't. I also note that all of our lives have not irrevocably changed for the better because of whatever techno-voodoo that he was raging against, anyway.

This is the best Trillian skin ever.

revelation, for showing me the passwords i end up forgetting.

homesite. take frontpage and dreamweaver and shove 'em up your ass; this is still the bestest html editor i've ever used.

memturbo. cheesy logo, but nice for when i exit memory- and hard-drive-intensive games. cleans it all up a bit without rebooting.

winace. i find this to be more useful than either winRAR or winZIP.

the rename. don't use it often, but when i need it i love it.

eudora. duh. haven't yet heard of a virus that exploits a hole in eudora, and it lets me show all messages as plaintext in the preview pane without downloading a plug-in.

paint shop pro and acdsee for image editing and viewing needs. also, thumbsplus for font archiving and management.

probably a bunch more, but this is all i can think of right now.

By this time tomorrow we can be doing BODY SHOTS off HOOKERS in some MEXICAN HELLHOLE

I thought shit like MemTurbo was pretty much shown to be absolutely worthless. I used to use it, but if it DOES do something, I'll start using it again. I remember reading a discussion, but can't really remember...

memturbo is actually useful if your operating system is using a very stupid virtual memory paging system (read: Win9x, WinME).

Warren's right, though, it won't really do much good if you're running Win2k or XP because the built in memory managers already do a good job of flushing out dead pages.

You know, I can't find the color switching program either - I'm working on it.  I just assumed he would have kept this feature.  Try the orginal MBG - it's definitely in that one.  I'm also trying to get ahold of the orginal author.

Actually, hacking around, it looks like with a little effort in a paint program you can convert skins made with MBG v1 to v2 format.  It looks like a simple cut & paste job.  Download MBG v1, and run maker.exe for the colors of your choice.  Compare the MBG2/IMAGEZ/blue.bmp to MBG/IMAGEZ/message-window-Blue.bmp and icons-Blue.bmp to see what to change.  Then you just need hack up blue.xml (it's just 1 line) to point to the new colored bmp, and copy it over files.xml.  Not too much work.  It'd be worth it to me, anyway - I really like this skin.

Memturbos an interesting little kluge of hacks thats been around for quite a while, will do very little for NT4/2k/XP but it does seem to help some on 9x and ME, reducing the needs for reboots significantly.

I use RAMPage (free) instead of the bloated MemTurbo. But, to really avoid reboots in a Win9x machine, the best thing to do is to only use Notepad.

More stuff that I like/use:

MWSnap: freeware screenshot tool.
Cacheman: optimize the windows cache.
Sound Control: nice sound volume util.
Buzz: the ONLY music software an amateur will need (free).
Renoise: Windows-based Tracker.
Ars Clip: clipboard util
